Treating a bottle-fed lamb with bloat

Mr Tumnus didn’t have the best start to life, being rejected by his mum and needing to be bottle fed. To make things worse, a couple of nights ago we went to feed him his bedtime bottle and he’d blown up like a balloon. I didn’t realise that bloat was quite as prevalent amongst bottle-feds, but it turns out it is.

We tubed him to let out as much gas as we could and drenched him with olive oil, ginger and bicarbonate of soda. Then we walked him round like a horse with collic. Whilst looking for solutions on the internet we came across a lot of references to using probiotic / prebiotic yoghurt as a bloat preventative in bottle fed lambs. A good resource can be found here.

Luckily, the next day Mr Tumnus was still alive and back to his usual size. Since then, I have been giving him a couple of spoons of live yoghurt with each bottle, and rather than allowing him to ad lib feed, continuing giving him regular bottles.
